「HAPPY!」に続く、イメージ・コミックス原作のSYFYチャンネルの新シリーズ。放送開始は1月だが第1話が先行配信されていた。

舞台は1987年のアメリカ。レーガン大統領の政策によって精神異常者は病院で保護されずに街へ放り出され、その一人に両親を殺された少年マーカスは、入れられていた孤児院を放火したという嫌疑をかけられて街をさまよっていた。そんな彼はバイクに乗って日本刀を操るヤクザの娘サヤと出会い、彼女が住む施設キングズ・ドミニオンへと連れてこられる。そこはリン校長のもと、さまざまなバックグラウンドをもった生徒たちが一流の暗殺者になるよう教育される「学校」だったのだ。行くあてもないためにリン校長の招きを受け入れて「生徒」となったマーカスだが、彼には多くの試練が待ち受けていた…というあらすじ。

製作にルッソ兄弟が関わっているほか、コミックのライターであるリック・リメンダーも少なくとも第1話にはいろいろ携わっているようで、「HAPPY!」に比べても概ねコミックの展開になってるかな？アーティストのウェス・クレイグの絵はマーカスの両親が死ぬところのフラッシュバックで用いられてました。

なお舞台が80年代ということでサントラにはニューウェーブ系のバンドの曲がコテコテに使われていて、キリング・ジョークにダムドにエコバニにザ・キュアーなどなど。そこまでガンガン流すか？といった感じだったけど。

キングズ・ドミニオンのリン校長は原作だと白ヒゲの小男だが、こちらでは「アベンジャーズ」のベネディクト・ウォンが演じている。実質的な主人公はベンジャミン・ワズワース演じるマーカスなものの、アジア系のウォンがクレジット上ではトップに出てますよ。あとは有名どころだと「X-MEN: アポカリプス」でジュビリーを演じたラナ・コンドルがサヤを演じているほか、先生役でヘンリー・ロリンズが出ています。

第1話の前半はマーカスが自分の生い立ちと境遇をナレーションで延々と語る形になっていて、まあコミック通りではあるのだが映像としては単調だな。後半はキングズ・ドミニオンにおけるさまざまな先生と生徒たちが紹介されていき、多くの生徒たちは自分のバックグラウンドにあったグループに属していて、ヒスパニックや黒人のギャング、サヤ率いるヤクザの組、白人至上主義者などなど。

マーカスは孤児院を焼いたという嫌疑で他の生徒にも白い目で見られ、ゴスやパンクの生徒とともにつまはじきにされているのだが、いかんせん登場人物が多すぎるなあ。ヒスパニックのギャングのメンバーとのケンカも盛り上がらずに、第1話は状況説明だけで終わってしまったような。今後はシリアルキラーなども登場するようで、話がだんだんこなれてくることに期待しましょう。
