いまちょっとVPNをゴニョゴニョしてアメリカのHULUに加入してまして、いくつか観たかった作品をチェックしているのでございます。そのうちの１つがこれで、バットマンの知られざるクリエイターであるビル・フィンガーにまつわるドキュメンタリー。

バットマンのクリエイターといえばアートも担当したボブ・ケイン（写真左）が有名だし、コミックも映画も長らくケインのみが唯一のクリエイターとしてクレジットされていたが、実際のキャラクター設定などはケインの友人だったビル・フィンガー（写真右）が行った、というのはアメコミファンのあいだで長らく語られてきた話でありまして、ここらへんは明確な証拠などは存在しないものの、ジェリー・ロビンソンやカーマイン・インファティーノといった同時代のアーティストが証言していることだし、ケイン自身もフィンガーの死後にしれっと認めてたりするのでまず間違いないのでしょう。

ケインの当初のデザインでは凡庸な格好だったバットマンを闇の騎士としてのデザインに変え、ジョーカーやリドラー、ブルース・ウェインといったキャラクターを生み出していったのが実はフィンガーであることが、このドキュメンタリーでは語られていく（ここらへんロビンソンの貢献もあったはずなので、あまり明確ではないのだが）。

ボブ・ケインはアーティストとしてよりもビジネスマンとして腕のたつタイプであったようで、DCコミックスには彼が唯一のクリエイターであると伝え、他のアーティストがバットマンを描くようになっても自分の名前のみを作品にクレジットさせ、そして60年代にアダム・ウエスト主演のTVシリーズが爆発的人気を博したことで彼の名前もコミックファン以外にも知られるようになる（実はフィンガーがTVシリーズ版のエピソードを１つ執筆していたことは知らなかった）。彼がDCコミックスとの間に「バットマンのクリエイター表記には自分の名前のみを載せること」という契約を結んだ、というのは長らくファンのあいだで語られてきた話だが、その契約が実際に存在するのかはこのドキュメンタリーでも明らかにされない。

一方のフィンガーはコミック以外の文章なども書いて細々と糊口をしのぐ有様で、ケインが手にした名声とは無縁の生活を送っていた。それでも初期のコミコンのゲストに招かれ、当時のファンジンに彼がいかにバットマンに貢献したかというコラムが載せられたものの、ケインがそれに反論する手紙をそのファンジンに送っていたりして、まあケインはフィンガーによる貢献の事実を明らかに否定しようとしてたようです。そうしてフィンガーは家賃も払えぬまま、ニューヨークのアパートで1974年にひっそりと孤独死し、墓碑もない墓に葬られてしまう。

これらの話はアメコミのファンならば比較的よく知られているもので、ジャック・カービーや「スーパーマン」のシーゲル＆シュスターなど、コミックのクリエーターが出版社から満足な扱いを受けなかった話は他にもあるのだが、このドキュメンタリーは単にフィンガーの紹介をするだけでなく、作家のマーク・タイラー・ノーブルマン（写真上）の活動を追っていく。

子供向けの本を執筆しているノーブルマンはフィンガーと彼が受けた不遇のことを知り、彼の名誉を回復させるために積極的な調査を行なっていく。その一環としてフィンガーがかつて住んでいたアパートを訪れたり、近所のフィンガーという姓の人にかたっぱしから電話したりして、なんかストーカーと勘違いされそうなこともやってるのですが、すごくいい人そうなんですよノーブルマンさん。ちなみに彼はこの調査をもとにフィンガーの伝記も書いています。

どうもアメリカの法律では、フィンガーがバットマンのクリエイターでもあるよ、と主張するのは親族が行わないといけないらしく、ノーブルマンはフィンガーの子孫を探しに奮闘する。２度結婚したフィンガーは最初の妻との間に息子のフレッドをもうけていたが、フレッドはゲイであり1992年にエイズで亡くなっていた。

こうしてフィンガー家の血筋は絶えたかのように思われたが、フィンガーの妻の親族と話したところ、実はフレッドは一度結婚しており、アシーナという娘がいることが判明、ノーブルマンは早速彼女に会いにいく。そして彼女（とその母親）の口から、フレッドも彼なりに父のビルのことを想っており、バットマンのクリエイターであることを認めてもらおうと過去にDCコミックスを何度か訪問していたものの、願いは叶わなかったことが明かされる。

しかし当時に比べてバットマンはDCコミックス、さらにはワーナー・ブラザースにとって非常に重要なフランチャイズになっていた。よって企業としても余計な訴訟は避けたいこと、そしてノーブルマンの活動も功を奏して、アシーナは映画のプレミアに招待されたり、ワーナーから貢献料を払われたりする。これを見て、DCコミックスいいことやってるね！と一瞬思うのですが、そのうち彼女のもとには、バットマンに関する一切の権利を放棄するよう求める手紙がワーナーから送られてきてしまう。

これに不満を感じた彼女は、ワーナーと交渉することを決断。あまり著作権の定義とかよくわからないのですが、ビル・フィンガーがバットマンの創造に関わったことは明らかであることなどからワーナーが折れる形になり、バットマンの誕生から80年近く経ってから初めて、フィンガーがバットマンの共同クリエイターとしてクレジットされることが認められ、その後公開された「バットマン vs スーパーマン」でフィンガーの名前が出てくるのをノーブルマンが見つめるところでドキュメンタリーは終わる。

バットマンの知られざるクリエイターをただ紹介するだけのドキュメンタリーかな、と思ったら後半は一人の男性の根気強い活動の話になり、それが実際に物事を変えるという展開は見ごたえのあるものでした。バットマンに限らず、アメコミのキャラクターってクリエイターが誰だか明確にされていないものが意外と多いので、これが状況の改善につながっていくといいなと。劇中ではケヴィン・スミスやロイ・トーマスに加えてなぜかトッド・マクファーレンがインタビューされていて、ニール・ゲイマンと著作権であれだけ争ったお前が何を言うか、という感じでしたが。

あとはね、クリエイターを自認する人たちは子孫作っといたほうがいいよ、という重要性が感じられる内容でした。ゲイでも子供つくっておけば、あとで印税がっぽり貰えるかもしれませんから！
