久しぶりにアメコミについて書いてみる。いま現在アメコミ業界が面している大きな危機についていくつかの記事を読んで自分なりにまとめてみましたが、流通の仕組みとかを完全に把握してるわけではないので、修正すべき点とかあればtwitterかコメント欄でお知らせください。

アメコミの新刊を追っている人ならすでにご存知だと思うが、アメリカではここ１ヶ月くらい新刊が発行されていない状態が続いているのですね。DCやマーベルだけではなく、イメージやダークホース、ヴァリアントといった他の出版社の作品もみんな新作が止まってしまっている。その直接の原因は他の多くのビジネス同様にCOVID-19コロナウィルスにあるわけだが、同時にアメコミの流通システムが抱えていた問題を浮き彫りにしたとも言えよう。まずは発行が止まった理由を順に説明していくと：

  • コロナウィルスによるロックダウンを受けて、コミックショップの多くが休業したか、営業したとしても客が来なくなった。
  • このために各店の売り上げがガクンと落ち、取次業者であるダイヤモンド・コミックスに新刊の注文ができなくなった。
  • それを受けてダイアモンドは、DCやマーベルといった出版社に新刊への支払いをしないと発表した。

というのが大まかな流れ。ここでアメコミの流通について説明しておくと、アメコミは（今でも）書店で売られるようなものではなく、ニューススタンドやドラッグストアで売られる定期刊行物だったわけですね。それが70年代にオイルショックなどの影響で売り上げが落ち、業界が危機に陥った時に登場したのが、コミックの専門店（小売店）であるコミックショップに取次業者が納品する「ダイレクト・マーケット」という流通形態。これの説明はウィキペディアを読んでもらうとして、要するにコミック専門店に返本不可でコミックを販売することで取次業者は毎月それなりの売上を見込めたし、専門店も高い値引率で取次業者からコミックを仕入れることができたわけ。ただし返本ができないために、専門店は毎月それなりの見通しを立てて新刊の冊数を注文しなければならないという、半ばバクチみたいなことが続いていたシステムなのですよね。

そしてアメコミの取次業者として圧倒的なシェアを誇るのが、スティーブ・ゲッピ率いるダイヤモンド・コミックス・ディストリビューターズ。DCやマーベルといった大手出版社と独占配給契約を結び、全米のコミックの取次の99％を占めるという寡占企業。なぜこれが独占禁止法の対象にならないかというと、コミック市場は小さすぎて寡占の対象にならない、というのがゲッピの言い訳だそうな。90年代には倒産する直前でバブル気味だったマーベルが、業界3位の取次業者を買収してダイヤモンドに対抗しようとしたものの、あえなく敗退している。とにかくダイヤモンドが取次をストップしたら全米のコミックの流通が止まる、というのが今回の事例で明らかになったと思う。

でも今や電子書籍の時代ですから、小売店などを飛ばしてデジタル・フォーマットで新刊を発行すればいいんじゃね？とは誰もが思うところで、例えばDCコミックスはちょっとデジタル先行の新刊を出してたりする。「AV CLUB」の記事もデジタルコミックこそが主流になるべきだという論調だが、コミック専門店というのは（特に大手の）出版社にとっては重要な顧客であり、足蹴にできない存在なのですよね。実際にDCは小売店を助けるために25万ドルを寄付したりしている。デジタル出版に重きを置いてしまうと専門店からクレームが来てしまうわけで、そのために出版社は新刊の製作を停止。アメコミの製作は基本的に分担作業だからソーシャルディスタンシング向きだと思ったけど、皮肉な結果になってしまいましたね。

そもそも何でコミック専門店は重要な顧客なのか？これはどうも現在の出版社の売上の大部分はコミックそのものではなく、アパレルやトイといった、コミック専門店で売られている（当然ダウンロードできない）商品で成り立っているかららしいのですね。業界最大手の小売店であるマイルハイ・コミックスの社長曰く、新作のコミックスの売上は全体の20％以下で、収益はほぼゼロなのだとか。でもマーベルなんて映画でガッポリ儲けてるやん？とも思うけど、コロナウィルスの影響で親会社の株価もドーンと下がっていて、出版の方にお金がまわってきてないらしい。

とはいえいつまでも新刊を出さない訳にはいかないので、ダイヤモンドは5月20日を目安に取次を再開すると発表。あくまでも目安ですが。またDCやアーチー・コミックスなどの出版社は返本を許可したり、小売店が取次業者も兼ねるようになって（この仕組みがよく分からんのだが）、ダイヤモンドを経由しなくても新刊を届けられるようになるそうな。

とはいえアメコミ業界は過去にも多くの危機に瀕してきたわけで、今回も何らかの形で生き残ることはできるでしょう。他の多くのビジネスと同様、コロナウィルスが収束したあとにビジネスモデルがどれだけ変わってるかを推測するのは難しいのだが、おそらく取次にあたってのダイヤモンド一強というモデルは崩れてくるのではないかと。ダイヤモンドも別に悪い会社じゃないけど、1つの会社に頼りすぎるのは経済的に健全ではないでしょ。

また多くのところで目にした意見は、いま紙で出版されているコミックのタイトルが多すぎるというもので、これは「商品」を大量に売り付けて（バリアント・カバーみたいなギミックで誘って）小売店から売上を得るダイヤモンドの姿勢を反映したものだけど、これをきっかけに紙のコミックは減ってデジタルに移行していくのではないだろうか。しかしその場合、コミック・ショップにやってくる新刊が減って、新たなカルチャーに触れるところではなく、アパレルとトイと昔のコミックが並ぶ、マイルハイの社長が言うような「ポップカルチャー再利用センター」になってしまうのではという一抹の不安を抱かずにはいられないのです。
