ついこないだその存在を知ったんだが、2005年に「スター・ウォーズ エピソード3/シスの復讐」が公開されたとき、中国では例によって海賊版のDVDが速攻で流出されたわけだが、流出させた方々はご丁寧にもDVDに中文字幕だけでなく英文字幕も追加させておられたそうな。それがなぜか英語のセリフをそのまま転写したものではなく、中国語から翻訳し直した字幕であったために翻訳過程で誤訳・珍訳が続出し、その凄まじいインパクトが西側諸国で話題になったのがこの「Star war – The Third Gathers: Backstroke Of The West」というわけ。ルーカスフィルム作品の海賊版の映像なんて見つけるの難しいかな、と思っていたらyoutubeに全編がアップされていた。すげえ。当然ながら映像は汚いし、スクイーズもかかってますが。タイムコードが表示されていることから察するに、原盤を流出させたのは業界関係者だよな。映画館での撮影を取り締まる以前に、こういう悪徳業者を捕まえるのが先だと思うけど。
そしてその翻訳だけど、題名からしてスゴいことになってるのは見ての通り。中国題は「星際大戰三部曲：西斯大帝的復仇」だそうなので「西」が「west」と訳されたんだろうというのは想像つくけど、残りの「斯大帝的復仇」がなぜ「背泳ぎ（backstroke)」となったのかはまるで見当もつかない。冒頭のシーンもインパクト大で、あの奥にスクロールする黄色い英文字幕が出ているにもかかわらず、その上に珍訳だらけの英文字幕がかぶさっているという、実にシュールな展開で映画がスタート。もちろん本編もずっとこんな感じで、「R2 go back」というセリフが「R2 come back」なんて誤訳になってるのはまだ可愛いくらい。「the west ages is already on doing not reply」などといった文法的にも破綻した翻訳がほぼ全ての字幕に対して行われ、もはや字幕というよりもダダイストの詩を読んでいるかのような気分になってくる。「像」を「象」と読み間違えたのか「I can’t lose again your elephant」なんて字幕がでてきたり、もうすごいのなんのって。単純に機械翻訳にかけてるのかと思ったけど、中から英への機械翻訳って初歩的な文法ミスも回避できないのか？
あと固有名詞の翻訳も強烈で、アナキン（阿納金）は「allah gold」だし、オビワン（歐比瓦）は「ratio tile」、ジェダイ評議会は「Presbyterian Church」などといった、元の言葉からは想像もつかないような単語のオンパレード。そしていちばん最後にダース・ベイダーが「Nooooooo」と叫ぶ、演出のマズさで悪名高いシーンの字幕はなぜか「do not want」。これって「Nooooooo」＝「イヤだ」＝「do not want」ということなのかな。この「do not want」はそのインパクトゆえに一種のインターネット・ミームになったそうな。
まあこのときは中国のアホ翻訳が話題になったけど、日本も対岸の火事だとは思ってられないんじゃないですかね。「All your base are belong to us」のようないわゆるengrishは巷でいろいろ目にするし、いわゆるプロの字幕翻訳家だってとんでもないミスをしてる例もありますから。とりあえずこの映画から学べる教訓としては「海賊版を作るときは自国の言語の字幕だけ付けとけ」ということでしょうか。
