「Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man」鑑賞

カナダの誇る吟遊詩人、レナード・コーエンのトリビュート・コンサート兼ドキュメンタリーを収めた「Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man」を観る。　名前から分かるようにコーエンはユダヤ人だけど、ユダヤ人嫌いのメル・ギブソンがプロデューサーに名を連ねていた。まあいろいろあるんでしょう。

シドニーのオペラハウスで催されたコンサートの映像のあいまに、参加ミュージシャンやコーエンのインタビューが挿入されるような形式の作品。コンサートにはニック・ケイヴやジャーヴィス・コッカー、ルーファス・ウェインライトといった有名どころから、アントニーやハンサム・ファミリーのような「あんた誰？」といったミュージシャンまでが顔を揃え、コーエンの曲を歌っていく。

個人的にレナード・コーエンの曲って、本人がやると女性コーラスとかをコテコテに入れて変なアレンジをしがちなので、他人が歌った方が良い場合が多いと思うんだが、今回のコンサートでもなかなか出来のいい歌を聞くことができる。個人的なお気に入りはケイヴの歌う「スザンヌ」やベス・オートンの「シスターズ・オブ・マーシー」あたりかな。あと最後にU2をバックにコーエンが「タワー・オブ・ソング」を歌う映像が入っていて（コンサートとは別収録）、これもなかなかカッコいい。

そしてインタビューの部分ではコーエンによって自らの生い立ちが語られていくんだが、あの人って普通に話していても言葉使いがどことなく詩的になっていて、言ってることがひどく抽象的になってるんだよね。だからコーエンのことを何も知らない人が見たら、かなり分かりにくい内容になってるかもしれない。でも父親が他界した時の逸話とか、禅寺に入門したときの話といった興味深い話をいろいろ聞くことができる。

それにしてもモントリオールで詩人たちに囲まれて育ち、ギリシャで小説を書き、後年には禅寺にこもって修行したなんて、ずいぶん羨ましい人生を送ってるよなあ。
