パイロット版だけ製作されてシリーズ化されなかった「GLOBAL FREQUENCY」についてこないだ書いたけど、同じくパイロット版だけが製作されたカルト・コメディ「HEAT VISION AND JACK」の映像を入手したので早速観る。

1999年に製作されたこの作品は、監督がベン・スティラーで主人公がジャック・ブラック、喋るバイクの声がオーウェン・ウィルソンとキャストがやけに豪華。「喋るバイク」ということで分かるかもしれないが、内容は「ナイトライダー」をパロったもので、チープなシンセ音楽とショボい特殊効果といった、80年代のSF・アクションドラマの雰囲気がよく出ていて非常に楽しい。しかも悪い宇宙人として故ヴィンセント・スキャベリまでが出演してるので、まるで「バカルー・バンザイ」を観てるような気にもなってくる。ちなみに女性保安官役のクリスティーン・テイラーは、この作品に出たのがきっかけでスティラーと結婚したんだとか。

話の設定は、宇宙飛行士だったジャックは「不適切な量」の太陽エネルギーを浴びたために脳が発達し、あらゆることを知っている人間となった。そして彼の脳を狙うNASAの追跡者から逃げるために、彼は友人のダグと一体化したバイク「ヒート・ビジョン」にまたがって各地を放浪し、さまざなな冒険に遭遇していくのだった…というようなもの。彼を追うNASAの人間を、なぜかロン・シルバーが「本人」として演じていて、周りの人に「あなた「タイムコップ」に出てたでしょ？」なんて言われてるのが笑える。またジャックは日光にあたっている時だけ頭脳明晰になるというのが特徴で、夜の間はマヌケなんだけど、陽にあたると「オレはなーんでも知ってるぜ！」と言いながら頭の上に電球がつくのがマンガみたいですげー面白い。

これが作られた当時のジャック・ブラックやオーウェン・ウィルソンはまだ比較的無名だったとはいえ、これがシリーズ化されなかったのは何とも残念。もっと多くのエピソードを観てみたかったなあ。
