「トイ・ストーリー３」を観てないのであまり大きなことは言えないのだが、個人的にこの夏のお薦め映画は「インセプション」とこの作品かと。
ストーリー自体はとてもベタで、恐ろしい存在だと思われていたドラゴンと少年が交流していくうちにお互いに心を開いていき、やがて共存することの大切さを学ぶという、映画のポスターを見ただけでも予想がついてしまうような話が続くわけだが、この王道の展開がかえって素朴かつ力強いものをストーリーに与えているのではないかと。従来のドリームワークスのアニメはピクサー作品に比べて、ムダな下ネタや時事ネタのパロディなどを詰め込んで作品の質を下げている印象があったんだけど、今回はそれを排除したことでより多くの観客にアピールできる内容になっている。やっとピクサーに対抗できる作品が出てきたな、という感じ。
少年がドラゴンと空を駆け回るシーンも非常にダイナミックで見応えがあって、これなら3Dで観ても悪くはないかな、と思わせる出来だった（それでも俺は3D嫌いだけどね）。後半の展開には「君たち、ドラゴンの生態系を破壊してない？」と思ったが、少しビタースウィートなヒネリのあるラストも含め、大変楽しめる作品であった。
原作は何巻もある絵本だし、続編の製作も決まってるらしいけど、「シュレック」シリーズみたいにダラダラ続くフランチャイズにならないことを願うばかりです…。
