フォックスの新作シットコム。個人的にフォックスのシットコムはすべてあの傑作「ブルース一家は大暴走」こと「Arrested Development」と比べてしまいがちなのですが、この作品は奇天烈な一家が主役で、ラフトラックなしのシングルカメラ番組という点では「AD」に通じるところがあったかな。
主人公のジミー・チャンスは典型的なホワイトトラッシュの家庭に育った23歳の青年で、日雇い業者の父親やチェーンスモーカーの母親、認知症の祖母、パーティー好きの従兄弟に囲まれながら、いつかは家を出て大成することを夢見ていた。そんなある日、彼は男に追いかけられていた女の子を助けたことから、そのまま彼女と一夜をともにしてしまう。しかし彼女は実は男を食い物にする犯罪者であり、逮捕された彼女は死刑判決を受けてしまう。だが彼女はジミーの子供を身ごもっていたことから、彼女の刑が執行されたあと、ジミーは赤子を引き取ってホープと名付け、何の育児経験もないままどうにか育てようとするのだが…というような話。
上の死刑執行うんぬんというのは殆ど話と関係なくて、要するに変人だらけの一家で赤ちゃんを育てようとする青年のドタバタを描いた内容になっている。主人公の親たちも単なるホワイトトラッシュのバカとして描かれているわけではなく、子供想いの優しい面も持っているなど、それなりに深みのある設定になっているかな。ただし狭い家の中でのドタバタを描くことには限界があるわけで、一家以外の人物とのやりとりをどこまで描けるかがポイントになってくるだろう。ジミーと恋仲になりそうなレジ係の女の子とか。あとジミーが繊細すぎるというか、あらゆることに対して受け身のリアクションしかしないため、主人公なのにキャラが立ってないのが気になったな。
赤ん坊を中心にしたTVシリーズってどうも長続きする気がしないのですが、悪い作品ではないとは思うので、これからもっと面白くなっていくことに期待しましょう。
