NY旅行中に録画しておいた「スタートレック：エンタープライズ」の最終話を観る。「新スタートレック（TNG）」や「ディープ・スペース・ナイン」、「ヴォイジャー」がどれもシーズン７まで放送されたのに対し、第４シーズンで打ち切りという不運な結末を迎えたわけだが、スラッシュドットなんかの書き込みを見る限りでは今シーズンの出来はずいぶん向上したらしいし、個人的にも「ヴォイジャー」なんぞよりはずっと優れたシリーズだったと思う。「BATTLESTAR GALACTICA」が大ヒットしていることを考えれば、SF番組の人気が衰えたというよりも、単に「スタートレック」というブランドが視聴者に飽きられたということになるのだろうか。

そしてその最終回だが、これがまたお粗末な出来で、エンタープライズ号が退役するまでの数日間の様子を「TNG」のライカーとトロイがホロデッキで鑑賞する、という変な仕掛けになっていた。ラストに豪華ゲストを持ってきて華を飾りたかったのだろうけど、逆に話の主役が「エンタープライズ」のキャストなのかライカーたちなのか中途半端で分かりにくく、アーチャーたちが「ただのホログラム」として軽んじられてるようなところがあったのが気にくわなかった。それに今までのシリーズはどれも最終話が２時間だったのに今回は１時間だけだったため、ずいぶん話の展開が急ぎ足になり、途中で重要なクルーが死ぬってのに何の余韻もなしに話は進み、しまいには最後に主人公がスピーチをする直前で終わるという、実にあっけないというか、後味の悪い終わり方を迎えたと思う。 おまけにこの話に出てくるライカーとトロイは「TNG」第７シーズンのエピソード「THE PEGASUS」の頃の２人、という設定になっているものの、当然演じている役者は当時より10年近く老けてるわけだから違和感がありありで、いい年したオバサンがセーラー服を着て女子高生と偽ってアダルトビデオに出てるような、すごい場違いな雰囲気が漂っているのが非常に無様であった。

この話の脚本を書いたのは、このシリーズの原案者でもあるリック・バーマンとブラノン・ブラガだが、この２人って「スタートレック」をつまらないものにした、ということで多くのファンから糾弾されているわけで、確かにこの話を見る限りではクレバーなものを書こうとして見事に失敗して墜落炎上したという、ここ最近の彼らのパターンからまるで抜け出せてないと思う。

しかしここまで書いといて何だが、個人的にはこの話を観てもあまり怒りはしなかった。話の舞台が今までのエピソードの10年後という、一種の「外伝」もしくは「パラレルワールド」的な扱いになっていることや、この１つ前のエピソード（前後編）の方がむしろ最終話によく似合う、しんみりした終わり方をしていたためかもしれない。あるいはシリーズ打ち切りがあまりにもファンの間で話題になってしまったため、打ち切り発表後のエピソードがどれも「プチ最終話」のように感じられたからだろうか。

「ギャラクティカ」が不死鳥のごとく甦ったように、「スタートレック」がまたテレビや劇場において復活する日はそんなに遠くはないだろう。パラマウントのドル箱ですからね。ただその際は、バーマン＆ブラガではない人々が舞台裏にいることを祈るばかりである。
