３泊４日でモントリオールに行ってきました。カナダに住んで半年になるが、トロントの外に出るのはこれが初めてになる。今まで寒かったからね。 バスでオタワを過ぎ、ケベック州に入ってからは交通標識などがどんどんフランス語になってきて、モントリオールに着いたときには全てがフランス語の世界になっていた。前にアイルランドのゲールタハト（ゲール語が使用されてる地域）に行った時なんかはまだ英語が使えたけど、モントリオールでは英語があくまでも外国語であることを今さらながら認識する。１つの国に２つの公用言語があるなんて不便に思えるかもしれないが、カナダは面積がだだっ広いうえに州ごとの独立性が非常に強い国なので、それぞれの州がまるで１つの国のように機能しているわけだ。フランス語はある程度できるものの、久しぶりに異国情緒を満喫した旅でした。
宿泊したのは湖に面した旧市街の中心にあるホステルで、画廊やレストランが立ち並ぶオシャレな通りの一角にあった。部屋というよりもテントのような所で寝泊まりしたわけだが、まあ安くて清潔だから文句は言えまい。チェックインしたあとはダウンタウンに向かうものの、土地勘もないので適当にバスとかを乗り継ぎながらグルグル町中を巡る。全体的に天候の悪い一日で、ヒョウまで降ってきたのには参った。
