昨日に比べて天気がいい日だったので、街の南にある２つの離れ小島まで足を伸ばす。これらはモントリオールがその名を世界に知らしめるきっかけとなった世界万博が1967年に行われた土地であり、今でもパビリオンのいくつかが残っていたりする。最も印象的だったのは万博に合わせて建築されたマンション「Habitat ’67」で、当時わずか23歳の建築家によってデザインされたこの建物（下記写真参照）は前衛の極みというか、奇想天外というか、実に独創的なデザインをしてるのだけど、どことなくレトロな雰囲気を持っているのが非常に面白い。これを見れただけでもモントリオールに来た価値はあったと思えるような建物だった。マンションなので実際に人が住んでるんだけど、コンクリートの老朽化とかは大丈夫なんだろうか？今にも崩れそうなデザインなので心配してしまう。
それから市街に向かい、ダウンタウン北部にあるロイヤル山をトコトコ登る。そんなに高い山ではないけど、山頂までの道がひどく迂回してるので疲れた。木々に葉が茂ってなかったので見晴らしは良かったものの、紅葉の季節に来てたらもっと綺麗だったろうなあ。山頂の近くに展望台があって、「カナダの発見者は原住民の手を借りてこの山に登り、マウント・ロイヤルと命名した。これがモントリオールの語源である」なんて碑が置いてあった。でも原住民がいたんだったら、「発見」したってのはウソだと思うんだが。
その後は1976年にオリンピックが開催されたときに建造されたスタジアムに向かうものの、エキスポズがワシントンに移籍したことなどもあり、非常にさびれた雰囲気の建物だった。
