ＷＴＯ（世界貿易機関）などのメンバーになりすまし、世界中のテレビや講演会で珍妙な言動を繰り広げる社会派イタズラ集団「イエス・メン」の活動を追ったドキュメンタリー「THE YES MEN」をDVDで観た。監督は「素晴らしき映画野郎たち」のクリス・スミスら３人。マイケル・ムーアもちょこっと出てる。
イエス・メンの中心メンバーとなるのはビデオゲーム「シムコプター」にパンツ姿の男たちがゾロゾロ登場させるプログラムを書いていたアンディ・ビクルバウム（仮名）と、G.I.ジョー人形とバービー人形の声を入れ替えて店に置いてくるという活動をしていた「バービー解放戦線」のマイク・ボナーノ（仮名）の２人。彼らはまずインターネットで「www.gwbush.com」というサイトを立ち上げ、ジョージ・W・ブッシュの公式サイトをおちょくることに成功する。それからＷＴＯの公式サイトを完全にコピーしてパロディ化したサイト（見比べてみよう）を立ち上げるのだが、そのあまりのそっくりさにダマされた世界中の人々から講演会の招待を受けたことをきっかけに、彼らはＷＴＯの職員になりすまして滑稽なプレゼンテーションを行い、先進国の利益ばかりを追求するＷＴＯの偽善ぶりをコケにしていくのだ。
まず最初の講演会で「イタリアやスペインにおけるシエスタ（昼寝）の廃止」および「売買できる投票権」のプレゼンテーションに成功した彼らはフィンランドに向かい、第三世界の労働者をモニター上で管理する「遠隔奴隷制」と資本家の娯楽時間の確保を両立させる新発明「マネージメント・レジャースーツ」を発表する。金ピカのボディースーツの股間から巨大な棒形の風船が生え、その先にモニターがついてるこのスーツのデザインはかなりマヌケ。しかも講演会で背広を破り捨てて突然そのスーツ姿になるのだから最高に笑える。こんなプレゼンテーションをやってれば普通は追い出されるか警察を呼ばれそうなものだけど、なんと観客たちはイエス・メンの説明をまるで疑おうともせずに拍手までしてしまうのだ。これは人がＷＴＯなどの巨大団体の言うことをそのまま信じてしまうことのいい証明だろう。特典のコメンタリーによると、このプレゼンテーションに文句を言った人は１人しかいなかったとか。
こうして誰にも疑われることなくフィンランドを後にしたイエス・メンの次なる活動場所はアメリカの大学。ここでハンバーガーの有効的なリサイクルについて学生たちにプレゼンを行うのだ。彼らは人体は食物の栄養の20％しか摂取しないことを説明したのち、先進国の人々が食べて「排泄した」ハンバーガーをリサイクルし、発展途上国の人々に与えるという、これまたとてつもない案を発表する。事前に腹の空いた学生たちにハンバーガーを配っておいてからこんな発表をするのが笑える。若い学生が相手だということもあってプレゼン後はかなりの論議が巻き起こるものの、ここでも誰も彼らが偽者だと気づく人がいないのが興味深い。
それから最後に彼らはオーストラリアの講演会に向かい「ＷＴＯの解散」を宣言するものの、このネタはちょっと規模が大きすぎて不発に終わったかな。それでもこの話を信じて議会で取り上げた議員がカナダにいたらしい。そしてこれ以降は彼らはＷＴＯから手を引き、標的を別の団体に移していく。
イエス・メン本人たちに言わせると、彼らのやってることはＷＴＯなどの団体が貧しい国々をいかに苦しめているかという真実の姿を人々に見せるための「アイデンティティ訂正」であるらしい。直接WTOを批判しているわけではなく、職員の姿を借りてコケにしているわけだから「批判」よりも「中傷」の色合いが強いかもしれないが、テレビの討論や観客との質疑応答をうまくこなしてしまう姿を見ると、ＷＴＯの活動について実によく勉強していることがすぐ分かる。単なる愉快犯だったらあそこまで出来ないでしょ。
しかし講演会の内容がメディアとかに大きく取り上げられてるのに、ＷＴＯがまるで気づかなかったのは何故なんだろう。ちなみに以前にＷＴＯがシアトルで会議を開いた時に起きた大暴動は、実はデモ隊の後ろに潜んでいた私服警官がわざと起こしたものだという話を聞いたことがあるが、その一方ではイエス・メンのような連中がＷＴＯに潜んで活動してるわけだ。
この映画の完成後もイエス・メンはいろんなところから講演の依頼を受け続け、最近ではダウ・ケミカルのスポークスマンになりすましてBBCに出演したらしい。今後はどんなところに彼らは出現するのだろう？
