話の設定とか展開はかなりベタで、疎遠になった兄弟とか元アル中の父親、試合を心配そうに見つめる妻や生徒たち、強豪選手をスパーリングでノシて周囲を唖然とさせる無名選手、なんていう少年マンガ的な要素が前半はてんこ盛りで、トレーニングのシーンも「Xメン；ファースト・ジェネレーション」にあったスプリットスクリーンのモンタージュなんかを使っていて、定番だなあという感じ。
しかし後半のMMA大会になってからは話が俄然と面白くなってきて、試合のシーンがどれも非常にリアルなものになっている。俺自身はMMAにまるで詳しくないものの、「あ、これはウソだな」と思わせるような展開は無かったと思う。ブレンダンがちょっと打たれ強すぎる気はしたけどね。
役者の演技も非常によく、パディを演じるニック・ノルティはやはりアル中オヤジの演技がよく似合う。ブレンダン役のジョエル・エドガートン（って「スター・ウォーズ」のオーウェンおじさんの人か！）は目がちっこいのでいまいち感情表現が分かりにくいかな。圧巻なのはトミー役のトム・ハーディで、プロ顔負けの筋肉をつけて怪物みたいなファイティング・スキルを見せつけてくれる。これなら「ダークナイト・ライジング」のベイン役も期待できそうだな。あとブレンダンの妻を演じるジェニファー・モリソンが意外にも良かった。他にもMMAの関係者がたくさん出てるみたい。元WWEのカート・アングルもロシアの選手として登場するぞ。
ベタな内容でも話のツボをちゃんと押さえてれば面白くなるんだよ、というお手本のような良作。監督のギャヴィン・オコナーはアイスホッケー映画の「ミラクル」も撮っているのでこういうスポーツものの映画は慣れてるんでしょうね。日本でも劇場公開すべきだと思う。
