サンダンスやカンヌなどで高い評価を受け、今年のベスト作品との声も挙っているファンタジー映画。
舞台となるのはルイジアナ南部の、堤防によって周囲と断絶された所にある『バスタブ』と呼ばれるコミュニティ。そこで６歳の少女ハッシュパピーは父親のウィンクとともに自然に囲まれて暮らしていた。ある日彼女は、太古の昔に巨大な獣たちが地上を跋扈していたことや、地球温暖化によりやがて海面が上昇し、バスタブもいずれ水没してしまうかもしれないことを学び、巨大な獣や自分が水に沈んだあとの世界のことに思いをめぐらせる。やがて大きな嵐がやってきたためにバスタブの住民の多くがその地を去り、土地の大半は水没し、残った動植物にも大きな被害をもたらしてしまう。さらにウィンクが病に侵されていることが判明する。自分の置かれた境遇を不安に感じるハッシュパピーだったが、そんな彼女のもとへ極地の氷から解き放たれた太古の獣たちが向かっていた…というようなストーリー。
いちおうファンタジー映画ではあるものの、幻想と現実が交差するようなシーンは１カ所くらいで、あとは自然に囲まれてたくましく生きる父と娘の物語が、現実味を持って描かれている。ジョン・セイルズの「フィオナの海」みたいな感じかな？主人公たちが住む『バスタブ』は無国籍的に描かれ、ヴードゥーとかガンボなどといったありがちな演出もなし。ちょっとディストピアSFみたいなところもあるし、主人公が世界の終わりについてあれこれ考えるさまはタルコフスキーの「サクリファイス」あたりにも通じるものを感じました。あと日本のジブリの作品と比較する人もいるようだけど、俺はよく分かりません。
舞台が制限されているわりには主人公たちは常にどこかに向かって移動しており、躍動感に満ちていて、アートハウス系の映画にありがちなまどろっこしさはまるでなし。まるでロードムービーのようでした。これ予算が1200万ドルくらいらしいけど、低予算映画であることを感じさせないほどセットや撮影が素晴らしかったよ。
監督のベン・ゼイトリンはアニメーション畑の人らしいが、初監督作品にしてこんな美しい映像を撮ってしまうとは。彼による音楽も良かったし。さらにハッシュパピーを演じるクベンザネ（Quvenzhané）・ワリスは撮影時はほんの５歳ほどだったのに感情豊かな演技を見せつけてくれるし、ウィンクを演じるドワイト・ヘンリーなんてキャスティング事務所の対面に店を構えていたパン屋さんですからね！それがプロ並みの演技を行い、ロサンゼルスの批評家賞とか穫ってしまってやんの。つまり関係者みんな映画を撮るのも出るのも初めてという作品なのに、こんな素晴らしい出来になってしまったという奇跡のような映画なのですよ。
アカデミー賞に何かしらうまくノミネートされれば日本での知名度もずっと上がるだろうが、そうでなくても多くの人に観てもらいたい逸品。
