ジェーン・カンピオンが脚本と監督を務めたミニシリーズ。いちおう放送局はBBCらしいがニュージーランドの番組という感じ。
舞台となるのはニュージーランドのパラダイスという田舎町。そこにある大きな湖に12歳の少女が服を着たまま浸かっているのが発見され、彼女は警察に保護される。そして検査の結果彼女が妊娠５ヶ月目であることが判明し、性的虐待を疑われて、ちょうど近くに住む母親を訪れていた女刑事のロビン・グリフィンが担当につけられる。しかし少女は誰が赤ん坊の父親であるかについては口を閉ざし、さらに少女の父親は地元で顔の利いたゴロツキであった。そしてその頃、湖に面した土地が購入され、男性に虐待された過去を持つ女性たちによるコミューンが作られるのだが、そのことをゴロツキの親父は快く思わず…というようなプロット。
これもまた「THE KILLING」もしくはこないだの「Broadchurch」に通じる田舎町の暗いミステリーといった内容で、イギリス人はこういうの好きなんだろうね。ただし今回のは殺人事件で話が始まるわけではなく（偶発的なものが１つ起きるが）、ミステリーよりも人間関係のドラマを強調したものになっている。ちなみに「湖の水は冷たい」と言われつつも屋外でタンクトップ着た人がいたりコート着た人がいたりと、季節感がいまいちよく分からなかったな。
主人公のロビンを演じるのは「マッドメン」のエリザベス・モス。アゴの立派なサイエントロジストという印象くらいしか持ってなかったけど、この作品ではメランコリックな役をうまく演じている。そして地元のゴロツキ親父を演じるのがピーター・マランで、それに対する女性コミューンのリーダーを演じるのがホリー・ハンターと、世界の果てで撮影した番組にしてはキャストは豪華な方かな。
出てくる女性は主人公も含めてみんな男性に虐げられたトラウマを抱えていて、一方で男たちは粗野なゴロツキ・不誠実な警官・サエない不動産屋など、といったかなり白黒ついた設定になっているのはカンピオンの思想を明確に表しているのでしょう。それはそれで悪くないけど、話が淡々としているためにミステリーであっても次の話への引っかけが無い、というのはシリーズとしてはどうなんでしょう。
