タランティーノってその趣味に走りまくる姿勢が、例えばジョー・ダンテなどと違ってどうも肌に合わないところがあったのだが、これはとても楽しめる作品であったよ。もちろん冒頭のクレジットからして趣味に走ってるわけだが、西部劇（というか南部劇）の枠組みのなかにうまくストーリーが収まっているというか。少なくとも「イングロリアス」みたいに途中でミュージックビデオみたいになってどうしよう、という展開はなかったし。
とはいえかつての「主人」たちに復讐する話かと思いきやその目的はすぐに果たされ、やっとディカプリオが出てきて話の流れが変わる展開は、「キル・ビル」以降の蘊蓄がやたら語られるスタイルに通じていてあまり好きではないのだが、こちらはアクション満載の描写とスピーディーな話の流れもあって２時間超の長尺も殆ど気にはならなかった。
いちばん良かったのがやはりキャスティングで、主役のジェイミー・フォックスはまあ普通としても、対するレオナルド・ディカプリオがイヤミな悪役を怪演していて素晴らしい。彼っていつもは主役ばかり演じているので肩に力が入りすぎている気がするのだが、実はこういう脇役を演じた方がもっと幅の広い演技ができるのではないか。彼の演技が巧いと思ったのは、同じく西部劇の「クイック・アンド・サ・デッド」以来だな。アカデミー賞とったクリストフ・ヴァルツも「イングロリアス」に続いて安定した演技力を見せつけてくれるものの、やはり善人よりも悪人を演じた前作の方が強烈な印象を残していたことは否めない。そういう意味では抜け目ない執事を演じたサミュエル・Ｌ・ジャクソンが見事でしたね。あとはブルース・ダーンとかラス・タンブリンといったいかにも監督好みの人たちがキャスティングされてるのだけど、クレジット見るまで気づかなかったよ。
今まであまりメジャー作品では扱われなかった奴隷制度にスポットライトをあてたことについて監督がいろいろ語ってるらしいが、その一方で時代考証とかは結構いいかげんだし（ダイナマイトの発明は1860年代だ！）、主人公の銃弾は相手の体を貫通してるのに悪役のものは死体で防げてしまう描写など、まああくまでも純粋な娯楽大作として割り切って観るべき作品でしょうね。
