鳴り物入りで始まったA&Eの新シリーズ。

ヒッチコックの傑作「サイコ」のプリクエル（前日譚）という設定のもので、父親が変死したあと田舎町に引っ越してきたノーマン・ベイツと母親のノーマのサイコな日々を描くものになるらしい。「サイコ」のプリクエルって「サイコ４」でやってたはずだが、こちらはいわゆるリ・イマジネーション的なものになっており、舞台は現代（だよね？）に移されている。

個人的にはプリクエルってどうも好きではなくて、「ゴッドファーザー　パートII」のデニーロのシーンも余分だと考えてるくらいなのですが、観客はそのキャラクターもしくはストーリーの結末（結果）を既に知っているうえ、観客の想像にまかせておけばいいところをベタベタと説明してしまう行為は不要だと思うのですね。「スター・ウォーズ」だってどんなにCGを駆使してクローン戦争を描こうとファンの空想には敵わないわけで。

そしてこの作品もノーマンとノーマの関係とかモーテルの歴史を説き明かしていくわけですが、第１話を観た限りではノーマンは内気だけど心の優しい少年で、ノーマは過保護だけど頑張るシングルマザーといったところ。その後２人にさっそく不幸が降り掛かってくるわけですが、「サイコ」から連想される陰湿な親子関係などはなく、２人で仲良く死体を処分するような、微笑ましい母と息子になっております。

観ていて気になったのが時代描写がチグハグなところで、モーテルのデザインや家具などは50年代のスタイルなのに、高校生とかはスマートフォンを使ってダンスパーティーに行ってる次第。オリジナルのスタイルを残しつつ設定を現代にした結果なのだろうが、とても違和感を感じたよ。またネクラなノーマンは転校してくるなり女の子に囲まれてモテモテだし、それを妬んだジョックたちにイジメられて「こ・の・う・ら・み・は・ら・さ・で・お・く・べ・き・か」的な展開になるかと思ったら男子にもそこそこ人気だし、その一方でノーマはモーテルの元所有者に押し入られて暴行されるなど、話の展開がどうも突拍子がなくて感情移入ができなかったよ。「これって夢の中の展開だよね？」と何度思ったことか。

ノーマンを演じるフレディ・ハイモアは故アンソニー・パーキンスの雰囲気をよく醸し出しているし、ノーマ役のヴェラ・ファーミガも体を張って母親役を熱演している（空回りしてるが）ほか、ゴッサム市長ことネスター・カーボネルが出てたりとキャストも有名どころが揃ってるのに、脚本がそれに見合ってないのが惜しい。古い家を舞台にしたホラーなら、まだ「アメリカン・ホラー・ストーリー」のほうが第１話はつかみがあったような（あちらもそんなに面白くはないですが）。本国のレビューでは「第３話から面白くなる」というものが多いようだけど、「サイコ」の名に恥じない作品になってくれるのかねえ。
