BBCによる全３話のゾンビドラマ。
舞台となるのは死人が行き返り、ゾンビと化して生者を襲うというパニックが起きたあとの世界。そのパニックは鎮圧され、ゾンビになった人のうち薬物療法で改善の余地が見られた人は「部分的死亡症候群（Partially Deceased Syndrome）」であると認定され、もといた社会へと戻るためのリハビリを受けていた。主人公の少年キエランもその１人で、ゾンビであったときに人を襲った罪悪感に苛まれているものの、十分にリハビリが済んだと見なされてヨークシャーの田舎町に住む両親のもとへ帰される。息子との再会を喜ぶ両親だったが、その田舎町にはまだ反ゾンビ感情が根強く残っており、ゾンビと戦った義勇軍の残党が幅を利かせていた。そしてキエランの身にも危険が迫ることになり…という設定。
テレビでも映画でもこれだけゾンビものが流行ってくると、このようなポストモダン（？）な設定の作品も出てくるわけで、最近ではゾンビの少年が少女に恋をする「Warm Bodies」なんて映画もありましたね。設定からするとコメディっぽい内容かと思ってたけど、どんよりと曇った空の下で繰り広げられる陰気なドラマでありました。こういうのはアメリカ人は作らないよね。
第１話ではあまり明らかにされないが、どうもキエランはゲイであるらしく、「ゾンビ差別＝ゲイ差別」というかなり分かりやすいアナロジーが展開されるらしい。ゾンビ嫌いの義勇軍のリーダーの息子が実はゾンビになっているというツイストも、ゲイを扱った作品ではよく見られるような。「Xメン：ファイナル・ディシジョン」でも同様な展開がありましたね。
あとはゾンビたちによる新興宗教のようなものが存在することが示唆されるのですが、今後の展開にどう絡んでくるかは不明。しかしテレビドラマとかに出てくる宗教のサイトって、なぜ開いたとたんに大音量とともにチープなフラッシュアニメが流れるのだろう。普通だったら一発でスパムサイト認定されるよな。
ゾンビ退治のアクションがあるわけでもなく、内容が暗くて日本人受けはしない作品かもしれないが、それなりに興味深い設定の番組なので残りの話もこんど観てみます。
