ニュー・ジャーマン・シネマの鬼才ヴェルナー・ヘルツォークがアマゾンの奥地で怪作「フィツカラルド」を撮影する姿を記録したドキュメンタリー「BURDEN OF DREAMS」のDVDを借りたので、特典としてついていた短編「ヴェルナー・ヘルツォーク、自分の靴を食う」を先に観る。 これはヘルツォークが知り合いの若き学生に映画製作を勧めて、「君が作品を完成させることができれば、私は靴を食べてみせよう」と約束したことから始まったもので、実際にその学生が作品を完成させたため、その試写会において靴を食べてみせたというもの。マンガみたいな話だけど、実際にやってのけるところがヘルツォークらしい。
ニンニクやトマトとともに５時間くらい煮込まれた革靴を、細かく切って黙々と食べていく姿が笑える。片方しか食べてないとか、靴底を食べてないとか細かい不満はあるものの、まあいい。
ちなみに彼が映画製作を勧めた学生とは、後に「フォッグ・オブ・ウォー」でアカデミー賞を獲得するエロール・モリス。彼が大成したのはヘルツォークのおかげ、ということになるのか。
