ダニー・ボイルの新作。去年のロンドン・オリンピックの前後に製作したものらしい。以後ネタバレ注意な。
一流の絵画を扱うオークション・ハウスに務めるサイモンは、オークション中にフランク率いる強盗団に襲撃され、ゴヤの作品を奪われてしまう。しかしフランクが手にしたのは空の額縁だけだった。実はサイモンとフランクはグルであり、サイモンが協力してフランクに絵画を渡すはずだったのが、サイモンが途中でどこかに隠してしまったのだ。しかし襲撃の最中にサイモンが頭を強打されたことで記憶喪失になってしまい、絵画をどこに隠したのかは彼自身も分からなくなってしまっていた。サイモンを拷問にかけても絵画の行方が分からないことを悟ったフランクは、彼の記憶を取り戻すために催眠療法のセラピストであるエリザベスという女性の助けを借りることにするのだが…というプロット。
サイモンとフランクとエリザベスの三者にそれぞれに思惑があって、陰謀や裏切りが錯綜していくさまはボイルのデビュー作「シャロウ・グレイヴ」に通じるところがあるかな。脚本も「グレイヴ」のジョン・ホッジと久しぶりに手を組んでいるし。元々「グレイヴ」のあとに別の脚本家から持ち込まれたストーリーがベースになっていて、それを今になって映画化したものなのだとか。以前にもその脚本を用いたTVムービーが製作されてるらしいので、そっちも観てみたいな。
最近のボイルの作品に顕著であった、凝ったアングルや視覚効果は「やや」抑え気味になっており、比較的ストレートなサスペンス映画に仕上がっている。ただ画面の色使いは個人的には好きになれなかったかな。頭の中を扱ったサスペンスということで「インセプション」と比べる向きもあるみたい。
サイモンを演じるのがジェームズ・マカヴォイで、「Xメン」とかを観たあとではスコットランド訛り全開の演技は結構違和感を感じますね。ヒール役のフランクはヴァンサン・カッセルが演じていて、熱演をしているものの他の２人に翻弄されてばかりなのでちょっと損な役。そして実質的な主人公ともいえるエリザベス役のロザリオ・ドーソンは下の毛も剃ってすっぽんぽんになるほどの体を張った演技をしているのですが、フェム・ファタールというには行動的すぎるというか、「やる側」と「やられる側」の境界がいまいち曖昧すぎたかもしれない。
登場人物みんなに陰があって感情移入しにくいところや、後になって考えるといろいろ穴があるプロット、そしてそもそも催眠術が万能すぎやしないか？という点などがひっかかって、ボイルの作品のなかでは必ずしも上位に来るものではないものの、相変わらずテンポのいい編集や比較的短めの尺に助けられ、中だるみせずに最後まで話を引っ張っていくことには成功しているかと。ボイルはいまの映画界においていちばん多種多様なジャンルを手がけている監督であり、人によっては「スラムドッグ」や「127時間」よりもこっちを好むこともあるでしょう。そしてジョン・ホッジと久々に手を組んだということは、次はいよいよ「トレインスポッティング」の続編か…？
