たぶん、あまり、知られてないであろう90年代の名曲

たまには音楽のお話しをちょっと。

ここ最近の映画、例えば「ヤング＝アダルト」とか「ワールズ・エンド」とかではアラフォーのぼっちな主人公が、大人になりきれずに過去の青春にしがみついていることを表すのに『未だに90年代の曲を聴いている』という実に分かりやすく、そしてイヤミな表現が使われているのであります。それに対して、アラフォーでぼっちでそこらへんの曲を未だに聞いている自分としては何の反論もできず、ただうなだれて枕を涙で濡らすことしかできないわけですが、でもまあ90年代って良い曲あったよね、ということで後の世代に伝えるべく（何を偉そうに）、たぶんあまり知られてないであろう90年代の名曲をいくつかここに記すことにします：

MC Tunes Vs. 808 State – The Only Rhyme That Bites

「ワールズ・エンド」の冒頭で使われてる曲。このあとすぐに「MC Tunesって誰だったっけ」という状態になりましたが、最近では「808ステイトって誰だったっけ」という感じになってしまったよな。

Soup Dragons – “I’m Free”

これも「ワールズ・エンド」で使われてる曲。R・ストーンズのカバーね。スープ・ドラゴンズってプライマル・スクリームとかのダンスっぽいロックが流行ったときにこういう曲を出して、そのあとシューゲイザーとかが台頭してきたときにギター・ポップをやって、その変わり身の早さがあざとくて決して好きなバンドではなかったが、アメリカのカレッジ・ラジオではギター・ポップになった後でウケて、しまいにはパブリック・エネミーともジョイント・コンサートをやってたとか？

Animals That Swim – Faded Glamour

日本での知名度は皆無に等しいと思うけど、最初の２枚のアルバムとかは本当に名盤だと思うバンド。アイルランドに留学してたときに大学のパブにライブやりに来ていて、俺以外だれも真っ当に観ていないなか、黙々と演奏する場末な感じがね、このサウンドにぴったりだったのですよ。

dEUS – Suds & Soda

本国では絶大な人気を誇る（らしい）、ベルギーのバンド。アバンギャルドな曲からフォークっぽい曲まで幅広い音楽性をもったバンドで、最初のアルバム３枚からのシングルはどれも名曲だと思う。

the Wolfgang Press – Kansas

4ADレーベルのバンドってピクシーズを除けばアート気取りな感じがしてあまり好きではないんだが、このバンドのこの曲は好きです。ケネディのお面は別の曲のビデオでも使ってたような。

The Mock Turtles – Can You Dig It?

『マッドチェスター』のころの一発屋バンド、と言ってしまえばそれまでだが、この曲は好きなんだよなあ。同郷の似たようなバンド（THE HIGHとか）よりも好きだ。ちなみにボーカルはスティーブ・クーガンの兄。

Buffalo Tom- For All To See

今回紹介するなかでは唯一のアメリカン・バンド。他にも良い曲があるのだけど、これが一番好きだな。「Glee」でカートのお父さん役立ったマイク・オマリーは彼らの長年のファンだそうです。

他にも、今となっては恥ずかしいようなバンドも聴いてたりするんですけどね、それは内緒ということで。90年代にはさ、「今の音楽はクソだ！50〜60年代のロックこそ本物だ！」とか言ってる人がいたわけですが（ソニック・ユースのドキュメンタリー「1991: The Year Punk Broke」を観よ）、今になってこれらの曲のyoutubeのコメントを読むと「今の音楽はクソだ！90年代のロックこそ本物だ！」みたいなことを書いてる人がたくさんいるわけで、まあそういうものの見方はいつの時代にもあるんだろう。

あとはじゃあ現代の音楽シーンに追いつくために、スネ毛でも剃って若作りしてアーケード・ファイアとかフォール・アウト・ボーイといったナウなバンド（だよね？）を聴けば良いのかというと、もはやそんな時間も気力も無いわけで、将来の自分に一抹の不安を抱きながらも、ティーンエイジ・ファンクラブを聴きつつ今日も眠りにつく次第であります。
