BBCのTVムービー。
メルヴィルの「白鯨」の元ネタになったとされる1820年の捕鯨船エセックス号の難破を描いたもので、ナンタケットを出発したエセックス号では律儀なポラード船長と熟練したチェイス一等航海士の折り合いがつかない状況であったが、クジラが捕まえられない日が続いたことで船員たちの不満は日に日に高まっていった。しかしようやく１匹のクジラをしとめ、さらにマッコウクジラを狙うものの、逆に船がクジラに攻撃され、エセックスは沈没してしまう。命からがら救命ボートで脱出した船員たちは１ヶ月近くにわたって漂流を続け、やがてとある無人島に到着する。しかしそこにも食料はなく、以前に漂着したらしき人々の遺書と白骨を発見したことから、一行はその島にとどまることを諦め、ふたたび海に出ることにするのだが…というお話し。
話の主人公としてポラードとチェイスのほかに新米船員のトーマス・ニッカーソンという少年がいて、老人になった彼による回顧録という形をとって話が進んでいく。つまり少なくともニッカーソンが難破を生き延びたことは冒頭から分かってしまうわけですね。まあ実際にはポラードもチェイスも生還したらしいので、誰が生き残ったかはあまり重要なポイントでは無いのかも知れないが。
むしろ問題なのはあまりにも全体的に淡々としている点で、ニッカーソンが船出に胸をときめかすところもないし、船ではみんなが不平をブツクサ言ってるだけ。せっかくの捕鯨シーンになっても躍動感は無く、しとめられたクジラはグロい血と油の塊となって暗い船倉にそのまま貯蔵される。飛び散る血しぶきとか日焼けでただれた肌とかは入念に映しているんだが、本来描かれるべき自然との争いとか極限状態における人間同士の葛藤とかはすごく淡白に扱われているのが納得いかない。
チェイス一等航海士を演じるのはジョナス・アームストロング…って「ロビン・フッド」の彼か。ポラード船長はアダム・レイナー。年取ってからこの出来事を懐古するニッカーソンをマーティン・シーンが演じているが、主要な語り手というほどでもないし、コスプレして半日で撮影しました的な感じが否めず、正直なところ彼の役を外してチェイスとポラードの衝突をもっと中心に添えても良かったのに。
「白鯨」好きとしてはそこそこ期待して観たものの、何も得るものの無い凡作でございました。
