自分が大学時代によく聴いていたメランコリックなバンド、ギャラクシー500のドラマーで現在はデーモン＆ナオミで活躍するデーモン・クルコフスキーが2012年の11月に、ピッチフォークのサイトに寄稿した記事。月額制の音楽ストリーミング・サービスが、ミュージシャンに雀の涙ほどの印税しか払っていないことを述べたもの。１年前の記事なので各サービスの財政状況は変わっているかもしれないが、先日もジョニー・マーがSpotifyを糾弾してたりするのを見ると、ミュージシャンの待遇はさして変わってないだろう。

ただし自分もこれに似たサービスに関わっていることもあり、ミュージシャンへの還元よりも株主の利益を優先してしまうSpotifyやPandoraの行動も、まあ理解できなくはない。これらの会社の成長と、ミュージシャンの利益を両立させるのはどうすれば良いのか、というのが悩ましい点でして。

ちょっと話はズレるが、いまから10年くらい前にiTunesストアで音楽の販売が開始されたときは、大手レコードレーベルに所属するアーティストも、極小レーベルのアーティストも、作品の販売網という点ではみんな横並びになったから、大手レコード会社のビジネスモデルが崩壊すると真剣に論じられていたような記憶がある。でも実際はあまりそうならず、大企業がさらに金持ちになったわけで。その事実を踏まえたうえで、じゃあものを作っている人たちはどうやって儲けましょうかね、というのがミュージシャンだけでなく映像業界とか出版関係の人たちのここ数年の課題になるであろう。

小銭稼ぎ

どの世代のミュージシャンたちも、激動の変化の時代を生きてきたと感じるだろう。しかし僕がこの比較的短いキャリアのなかで経験したこと——フォーマットの変化からビジネスモデルの消滅まで——は本当に驚くべきことだと思える。僕が初めて1988年に作ったアルバムはLPフォーマットでのみリリースされた。そして僕が次に作るアルバムも、LPのみでのリリースになるだろう。しかしこれらのアルバムのあいだに、音楽業界は商品の売買という単純な仕組みを、全力でメチャクチャにしてしまったようだ。レコーディングを通じてまっとうな収入を得ることが、現在のミュージシャンの大半にとってはもはや不可能になってしまっているのだから。

僕は昔を単純に懐かしんでいるわけじゃない。最初のアルバムだって全く稼ぎにはならなかった（当時契約していたレーベルのラフ・トレードは、僕らに何かしらの印税を払う前に倒産してしまった）。しかしミュージシャンが搾取される有様は、個人的な詐欺からもっとシステム化されたものへと変質を遂げた。そしてこの変質とともに、音楽業界が抱える問題を回避できる可能性はどんどん低くなってきている。僕らのように音楽の権利と印税を100％保持できたミュージシャンにとってもだ。

僕らの日常にどんどん入り込んできている、PandoraやSpotifyといった音楽ストリーミング・サービスを参考にしてみよう。こないだ2012年第１四半期分の印税の明細を受け取ったが、こうしたサービスを通じて僕らの音楽が聴かれているのは嬉しいとは思うよね。例えばギャラクシー500の曲『タグボート』はこの時期にPandoraで7800回ほど再生され、これに対して３人のソングライターは合計で21セント、つまり各人７セントの印税を受け取った。Spotifyはもっと支払いが良いよ：こっちでは『タグボート』が5960回再生されて、３人のソングライター全員で1.05ドル（各人35セント）という３ケタの印税になったのだから。

これを別の観点から考えてみよう：僕らは自身のレコーディングの権利を持っているから、僕の計算によるとPandoraで31万2000回の再生がされれば、LPレコード１枚——１枚だよ——の利益と同額になる（Spotifyでは4万7680回がLPレコード１枚分）。

あるいは歴史的な観点から考えてみよう：ギャラクシー500の初のリリースである『タグボート』の７インチシングルは、1000枚のプレスをするのに980.22ドル、あるいは１枚あたり98セントかかった。送料も含めてだ（ナオミが領収書を保管していた）！それをいくらで売ったかはもう憶えてないが、１枚あたり少なくとも２～３ドルの利益を得ることは容易だった。つまり７インチシングルを１枚売るだけで、PandoraやSpotifyで1万3760回再生されるよりも多くの利益を得ることができた。別の見方をすれば、1988年に1000枚のシングルを製作することは、2012年にその曲が1300万再生されるよりも多くの収益を僕らにもたらせることになる（新人バンドにとってはインターネットこそが収入源だと、人は言うけれど…）。

公平さのために言っておくと、僕らはシンガー・ソングライターであり、全ての権利を保持しているため、これらのストリーミング・サービスは二次的な印税も僕らに支払うことになる。これには各々の理由があり、それぞれ異なるところから支払われる。例えばPandoraは『非地上波ラジオ』と見なされ、そのストリームで曲が提供されているミュージシャンおよびソングライターに印税を支払わなければならない。これらの印税は、衛星ラジオが登場したときに政府によって設立された非営利団体であるSoundExchangeによって集められる。SoundExchangeは曲ごとの印税の計算はしないが、彼らによるとPandoraはこの四半期にギャラクシー500の曲を提供した分として総額64.17ドルを僕らに支払った。僕らはギャラクシー500の曲を64曲提供しているから、つまり１曲あたり約１ドル、もしくは各人あたり33セントの追加収益という計算になる。

『理論的には』と言ったのは、このSpotifyの0.004611ドルのレートには小さな透明の注意書きがびっしりついているからだ。このレートには再生回数やSpotifyへのリンク元、ユーザーの契約状況などを反映したアルゴリズムによる修正が、ストリームごとに加えられているらしい（その詳細をSpotifyは公表していない。少なくとも僕らには）。さらに僕らに渡された書類から計算してみたものの、Spotifyが僕らのレーベルに報告している再生回数と、著作権管理団体のBMIから報告されている再生回数を一致させることができなかった。結局のところ僕が計算できた限り、『タグボート』の再生によってSpotifyが僕らに支払った額は、9.18ドルだけだった。

「それは別に悪くはないんじゃないの」と言う人もいるかもしれない（本当に誰かがそう言うかは疑問だけど、誰かが言ったと仮定しよう）。商品に形があるわけではなく、音楽をこれらのサービスで提供するにあたり、僕らにはプレス代も印刷代も送料も、紙の領収書を25年も保管しておくスペースもかからないのだからと。確かにそうだろう。しかし形のない商品というのは、同じくらいに形のない利益しか生み出さないんだよね。

ここに問題の核心がある。僕がレコードを作り始めたとき、ビジネスのモデルはものすごく単純だった：何かを製作し、製作費よりも高い値付けをして、その値段で売ろうとする。これは７インチの商業資本主義だった。それに対して現在のモデルは、金銭的投機に近いものになっているようだ。PandoraやSpotifyは商品を売ってるのではなく、サービスへのアクセスや行動を販売している。誰かがサービスに加入すれば、皆が儲かるというように（クラウウドソーシングさえも、この現代の資本主義における『投機』モデルを踏襲していることに驚かされる。まだ存在していないものに対して人はお金を支払っているわけだから）。

しかしこれには難点が１つある：PandoraとSpotifyは、自身のサービスから何の儲けも得ていないのだ。2012年の第１四半期において、Pandora——ギャラクシー500の『タグボート』の使用料に1.21ドルだけ払った会社だよ——は2000万ドル以上の純損失を計上した。一方のSpotifyは、最新の報告によると2011年に5600万ドルの損失を出している。
