200万ドルというごく低予算ながら高い評価を得たホラー。日本でも配給会社が決まってるので劇場公開かDVD発売すると思うが、これ話のプロットがそのままネタバレにつながるので、前知識なしで作品を楽しみたい人は以下の文章を読むのをお控えください。

ジェイはデトロイトに住む多感な女子大生で、少し謎めいたヒューという男性とデートするようになっていた。やがてジェイとヒューは彼の車のなかでセックスをするものの、クロロホルムによって彼女は昏睡させられてしまう。目覚めた彼女に、自分の「呪い」について説明するヒュー。それはセックスによって移る（拡散ではなく引き継がれる）ものであり、
・呪いがかかっている人物には、「それ」が静かに追いかけてくる。
・「それ」は誰かしらの人間の姿をしている（知人のときもある）が、その姿は呪われている人物にしか見えない。
・「それ」につかまった人は死んでしまう。
・呪われた人が「それ」によって殺された場合、「それ」はその１つ前に呪いがかかっていた人を再び追いかける。
というもの。呪いを移したことを詫びつつ、ジェイにひたすら逃げるように伝えて姿を消すヒュー。そして自宅にもどったジェイは、やがて自分をゆっくりと追いかけてくる何者かの姿を目にするようになり…というストーリー。
上記の「それ」の説明だけ聞くとJホラーの設定みたいで陳腐に聞こえるかもしれないが、演出と音楽が巧みなので、背後から見知らぬ存在が近づいてくる…というシーンがすんげぇぇぇ怖く描かれているわけですよ。引きのショットや360度回転のショットを多用して、主人公たちを何者かが覗いているかのような雰囲気を醸し出しているほか、ジョン・カーペンターを多分にリスペクトした（これは監督のデビッド・ロバート・ミッチェルが認めている）電子音楽が全編に鳴り響いていて、「それ」が登場した途端にシンセ音がデェェェと鳴ったりするのが怖いのなんのって。
「それ」は目に見えないものの物理的には触れることのできる存在であり、その対処方法や逃げ方にはいろいろツッコミも入れたくなるものの、いいんだよ細けぇことは！またストーリーの時代設定も意図的に曖昧なものにしてあるので、あまりとやかく言わないように。
「それ」が性行為感染症のメタファーであることは容易に推測できるが（チャールズ・バーンズの「ブラック・ホール」を連想した）、それについて監督は深くは語っていない。むしろ死を目前にして絶望し、それを克服しようとする若者の心境がうまく描かれているかと。ドストエフスキーやT.S.エリオットの引用を持ち出してくるのは青臭いと思ったけどね。また「それ」が身にまとう人の姿や、劇中に出てくる写真などにもいろいろ意味がありそうで、今後も長きにわたって解釈が論じられる作品になるかと。「ドニー・ダーコ」を最初に観たときと同じような印象を受けたな。
低予算ゆえ有名な俳優などは出演していないが、主演のマイカ・モンローは「インデペンデンス・デイ」の続編に出演するそうでスターの仲間入りするんじゃないかと。あと彼女に横恋慕するオクテの少年を演じるキーア・ギルクリストが良かったな。この作品のヒットを受けて早くも続編製作の話がでているそうだけど、「それ」の秘密が変に明かされたりするのは野暮なんじゃないかとも思う。
