というわけで今年もやってきました「ドクター・フー」のクリスマス特番。これがないと俺のクリスマスは始まらんのよ（もう終わったけど）。今回は12代目ドクターを演じるピーター・カパルディの登場する最後の回、さらには長らくショウランナーを努めてきたスティーブン・モファットも降板する回ということもあり（脚本は当然モファット）、「記憶」をテーマにした今までのシリーズを回顧するような話であった。以降はネタバレ注意。
話は前のシリーズ10からそのまま続いていて、リジェネレーションの時期が間近に迫っていることを悟ったドクターは、それでも肉体の再生を拒んで南極へと到着する。そしてそこで出会った老人こそが、誰であろう初代ドクターであった。彼もまた（初の）リジェネレーションを拒んでターディスで南極に来ていたのだ。さらに二人は第一次世界大戦の戦場から迷い込んできた一人のイギリス兵に遭遇する。彼ら３人の出会いは時間の異常な乱れによって生じたものであり、その乱れを感知した巨大な宇宙船に彼らは捕獲される。その宇宙船で元コンパニオンのビルと再会するドクター。彼らを捕獲したのは人々の記憶を管理する存在「テスティモニー」であり、ドクターたちが兵士を元の戦地へ返すことを要求するが、彼を死地に戻すわけにはいかないとドクターはそれを拒み、宇宙船から脱走してテスティモニーの正体を探ろうとするが…というあらすじ。
初代ドクターを演じるのは故ウィリアム・ハートネル…では当然なくて、「An Adventure in Space and Time」でも同じ役を演じたデイビッド・ブラッドリー。昔ながらの頑固親父というノリの初代ドクターに対して、もっとモダンな12代目がいい凸凹コンビ感を出していまして、初代の女性に対する「政治的に正しくない」発言に慌てる12代目がいいぞ。彼らに出会うイギリス人兵士を演じるのが、裏方としても役者としても常連のマーク・ゲイティス。彼もモファットともに番組を去るという話があるので、ここで最後のお勤めでしょう。元コンパニオンのビルとしてパール・マッキーが再登場するほか、サプライズゲストも出てきます。
まあこのようにモフェット・フーの集大成というか同窓会のような内容なので、サスペンスとかはあまりなし。テスティモニーも悪役というわけでもないし。前のシリーズでXXしたビルを再登場させた手段が、50周年でローズを再登場させた方法の使い回しのような気もしたけど。あと俺が年をとっただけかもしれないが、数年前のプロットとか覚えてないのよ…。「宇宙最大のデータベース」として登場した彼とか、誰だったっけという感じだったし。そういう過去のプロットは、よくも悪くも新しいショウランナーが就任することで一掃されるのかな。あと毎度のことながらCGのキャラクターがショボいような。BBCそこらへんにもうちょっとお金かけようよ。
というわけで全体的にまったりしたエピソードであったが、ドクターが過去の自分と話し合い、自分の存在意義を再認識してリジェネレーションを受け入れる流れはよく描かれてましたよ。ラストのモノローグはウルっとくるほどの出来でございました。
こうして12代目は去り、次にやってくるのは13代目！初の女性ドクターだよ！ジョディ・ウィテカー演じる13代目は例によって最後にちょっと出てくるだけだが、多くの視聴者に好意的に迎えられているみたい（ヨークシャー訛りがキツいが）。また今までとは違った新たなドクターが楽しめそうなので、来年の秋まで待つのが残念ですが、期待しておきましょう。
