ザ・クー（The Coup）のブーツ・ライリーの初監督作。ザ・クーって日本での知名度はゼロだろうが、「革命」を意味するグループ名のごとく、ラジカルな左寄りのメッセージソングを唄ってることで知られる人たちなのですね。2001年にアルバムを出す直前にタイミング悪く9/11テロが起きて、そのジャケット（下）が物議を醸したのがいちばん話題になったときかもしれない。

んでこの映画の脚本自体は数年前に出来上がってたらしく、当初は映画化する金がないので脚本をもとに同名のコンセプトアルバムを作ったのだが、それが今年になってめでたく映画化されたらしい。当然ながらサントラはザ・クーの曲ばかりになっていた。

舞台となるのはオークランド。カシアスは金がなくて叔父の家に寝泊まりしている黒人の若者で、家賃を稼ぐためにリーガルビュー社でテレマーケティングの仕事に就くことになる。当初は全く顧客が捕まえられずに狼狽するカシアスだったが、やがて鼻にかかった「白人の声」で電話をかける技を習得し、電話先の相手に自分が白人だと思わせることで数々のセールス案件を獲得していく。その一方でリーガルビュー社の労働環境は劣悪なものになっていき、カシアスの仲間の労働者たちは組合を結成して会社に対抗しようとしていた。そんな彼らに同調するカシアスだったが彼は成績が上司に認められ、より高給取りの職員が勤務するという上階のフロアへの異動を命じられる。期待と不安を抱えながら上のフロアへと向かったカシアスだったが、そこで彼を待ち受けていたのは…というあらすじ。

当初は階級闘争とか人種差別などのテーマが絡んでいて、ああブーツ・ライリーらしいな…と思っていると話があらぬ方向に飛んで行って、なんじゃあこりゃあ？という展開になる作品であった。マイク・ジャッジの「オフィス・スペース」と「イディオクラシー」を足した感じに似ているというか。シュールな設定を盛り込んだ風刺的なコメディになっているのだけど、奇をてらいすぎて毒味が薄れてしまったような感がしなくもないかな。

主人公のカシアスを演じるのは「ゲット・アウト」のラキース・スタンフィールド。あとは監督のコネがあったのか有名俳優がいろいろ出ていて、ダニー・グローバーにテッサ・トンプソン、アーミー・ハマー、スティーヴン・ユァンなどなど。カシアスの「白人の声」をデビッド・クロスが吹き替えているほか、声だけのカメオ出演もいろいろあるでよ。

「黒人の声ではテレマーケティングが失敗するのに、白人の声だと成功するのはなぜか」というテーマを掘り下げていったらそれはそれで結構面白い内容になったかもしれないが、あまりにも設定を詰め込みすぎて全体のフォーカスがぼやけてしまったのが残念。しかし話をいろいろ入れ込んだ野心作であることは間違い無いので、今後もしまたブーツ・ライリーが映画を作るとしたら、結構面白いものが出来上がってくるかもしれない。この作品もこれからカルト人気を誇るものになっていくでしょう。
