ヴァーティゴの思い出

今週アメコミ業界を駆け巡ったニュースが、DCコミックスの大人向けレーベル「ヴァーティゴ」の主任編集長だったカレン・バーガーが退任するというもの。

退任の理由は明らかにされてないし、ここで無駄に憶測することは避けるが、昨年のDCユニバースのリブートによりスワンプ・シングやジョン・コンスタンティンといったヴァーティゴの範疇で扱われてたキャラクターが通常のDCユニバースのキャラクターに戻ったことなどから、ヴァーティゴの縮小は今年になってかなり明白になっており、それを受けての退任ということであれば必ずしも驚くことではないかもしれない。ヴァーティゴ自体はこのまま存続するらしいが、ヴァーティゴ＝カレン・バーガーであったことはアメコミのファンなら誰もが知っていたことで、1993年の立ち上げから続いた一つの時代がここで終わったことは間違いない。

何度かここでも書いているように大人向けのレーベルだからといってエロいというわけではなく、アメコミのメインストリームであるスーパーヒーローもののジャンルから外れた、より幅広い表現のできるコミックの受け皿としてヴァーティゴは存在したわけで、その根底にはアラン・ムーアの「スワンプ・シング」やグラント・モリソンの「ドゥーム・パトロール」や「アニマルマン」といった前衛的なスーパーヒーローコミックがあり、それを受けてヴァーティゴは誕生したんだよな。立ち上げ時における、ニール・ゲイマンの「サンドマン」やガース・エニスの「ヘルブレイザー」、ピーター・ミリガンの「シェイド・ザ・チェンジング・マン」などといったライターたちの作品のラインナップは非常に強力なものであったと記憶しています。そしてカレン・バーガーはそれだけの作家を引っ張って来れる才能があったんだよな。DCコミックスの関係者でアラン・ムーアが悪口言ってないの彼女くらいじゃないだろうか。

当初の作品はホラーめいたものが多く、作家はイギリス人でないといけないなどと冗談めいて言われていたものの、やがてSF色の強い「トランスメトロポリタン」や犯罪ものの「100バレッツ」、ファンタジーの「フェイブルス」などといった様々なジャンルの作品を抱えるようになったほか、デイヴィッド・ヴォイナロヴィッチやリディア・ランチ、アンソニー・ボーデインといったアメコミとは無縁な作家たちの作品も取り込むようになり、それはそれは刺激的な作品を連発したレーベルだったのですよ。アクション主体の派手なスーパーヒーロー作品が乱発されていた90年代において、ヴァーティゴの作品であることはクオリティの高さが保証されていた証であったし、それは2000年代も同様であったと思う。俺自身もちょうど大学生になり、通常のコミックに食傷気味であったときにヴァーティゴに出会い、その奥の深い内容に夢中になったっけ。今でも本棚に並ぶペーパーバックの多くはヴァーティゴのものです。作品を積極的にペーパーバック化し、過去のストーリーも容易に読めるようにしたのもヴァーティゴが最初じゃなかったっけ。

ヴァーティゴのキャラクターが普通のDCユニバースに出るようになったというのは、それだけ一般のアメコミの表現規制が緩くなったというか、読者層が成熟したということで歓迎したい気もするものの、ヴァーティゴの諸作品に大きく感化された者としては、こうして一つの時代が終わってしまったことに何とも寂しい気がするのです。

個人的にお勧めするヴァーティゴ作品とそのストーリーアーク：

３、Death: The High Cost of Living
４、The Invisibles: Entropy in the U.K.
５、Shade The Changing Man: A Season in Hell
